Port 49152: Start of the IANA Dynamic and/or Private port range (49152-65535)
Port 49152 is the first port of the Dynamic Ports range (49152 to 65535), which RFC 6335 says IANA never assigns. Operating systems pick ephemeral ports from this range for outgoing connections, and Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and later use 49152 to 65535 as the default dynamic port range. Windows RPC services that use dynamic endpoints and Apple device pairing and AirPlay features also listen on ports in this range.

Security Exposure
A listener on 49152 has no fixed meaning, so its risk depends on the process that opened it. On Windows, RPC clients rely on the RPC endpoint mapper (TCP 135) to learn which dynamic port a server was assigned, which is why Microsoft documents firewall rules for the dynamic range between internal servers. Allowing the whole range inbound from untrusted networks exposes whatever RPC services happen to be running.
Hardening
- +Do not allow 49152-65535 inbound from the internet; permit it only between servers that need RPC.
- +Where firewalls must pass RPC, restrict the RPC dynamic port range as described in Microsoft's guidance, keeping at least 100 ports.
- +Configure fixed ports for RPC services that support it, such as Active Directory replication, so rules can be narrower.
- +Identify the process behind any persistent listener in the range.
Monitoring
Map listening high ports to their owning processes with endpoint tooling, and alert when new long-lived listeners appear. Netlogon event 5820 indicates a misconfigured RPC port range.
Tools for Auditing and Monitoring Dynamic ports

Frequently Asked Questions
What is port 49152 used for?→
It has no fixed service. It is the first port of the dynamic range, used for ephemeral client ports and for services such as Windows RPC that bind to dynamic ports.
Why is my Windows machine listening on port 49152?→
Windows uses 49152 to 65535 as its default dynamic port range, and RPC services often take ports from it. Check the owning process to identify the service.
Is 49152 to 65535 the ephemeral port range?→
Yes. RFC 6335 defines 49152 to 65535 as the Dynamic Ports, also called Private or Ephemeral Ports.
